Being an Oktoberfest Tour Guide is a hard job. We work at the biggest party in the world. Our task is to drink beer and know everything about it. Our working location is Munich, one of the most beautiful cities in the world. Like I said, it’s a hard job.

But as you all know, Oktoberfest only lasts for two weeks every year. So, what do we, as Wiesn Tour Guides, do for the rest of the year? That is what we will tell you all about in this blog post.

Of course, we also need to stay up-to-date regarding the latest news of Munich breweries and beers, and even more importantly – we need to savor the beers regularly. Only like this can we ensure providing valuable insights like ‘what is the best beer of Oktoberfest’ or why this special brewery is not allowed to serve the beer at Oktoberfest or just tasting which ‘Starkbier’ of the breweries is the best one.

That is why Quirin and I went on our first beer tasting tour in February 2024. We had the plan to savor the beers of three of the six Oktoberfest breweries, namely Hofbräuhaus, Hacker-Pschorr, and Löwenbräu. It was a beautiful sunny day, and drinking three beers in the sun sounded like a manageable task. Reminder: One beer in Germany, of course, means one liter of beer. 😉

We had the plan to savor the beers of three of the six Oktoberfest breweries, namely Hofbräuhaus, Hacker-Pschorr, and Löwenbräu.

We started at the beautiful Löwenbräukeller on Nymphenburgerstraße in downtown Munich. The beer was perfectly served by the very friendly personnel (big shout-out!), and we could even take some fancy pictures and see the big hall, where the strong beer festival takes place every year in March. This, of course, increased our anticipation of the strong beer festival, where we would finally be able to wear our chic traditional costumes and lederhosen again. We wrote our own blog article about the ‘Starkbierfest’ – read more here.

We went on to the Hackerhaus close to Sendlinger Tor, where we could watch the FC Bayern Munich soccer game by chance while enjoying our second Mass. Next to the beer, we enjoyed a good ‘Schweinebraten’ and could continue empowered to the last station, which was the Hofbräuhaus. Of course, the rate of tourists here is higher than in other Bavarian restaurants because it is the most well-known in Munich and probably also in the world. However, we liked the international and lively ambiance as it reminds us a little bit of our beloved Oktoberfest.

So now you want to know for sure what is the best beer of these three Munich breweries in comparison, right? Well, this time it was very hard to say, and of course, it’s also always a matter of how well the servers are tapping the beer, how quickly it arrives at the table, and how fresh the keg is in general. Some other factors play a role as well. If you want to know every detail about how the perfect beer is being served, click on our blog article linked here. Here is our personal rating of our beer tasting tour part 1:

Lukas’ Rating:

  1. Hacker-Pschorr
  2. Löwenbräu
  3. Hofbräuhaus

Quirin’s Rating:

  1. Hacker-Pschorr
  2. Hofbräuhaus
  3. Löwenbräu

So this time, Hacker-Pschorr makes the race for the best Maß beer out of the three we tested. So next, we will savor the rest of the remaining beers of the breweries that serve at the Oktoberfest. And a short test of your knowledge – would you know which breweries these are? If not, click here to learn something about all breweries serving at Oktoberfest.

For everyone who already passed this little exam. Exactly! Spaten, Augustiner, and Paulaner are missing and will be the target for our next beer tasting job. We will keep you informed!
