The strong beer festival is like the Oktoberfest’s little brother and the chance for every Bavarian to dust off their Lederhosen and Dirndls, testing if they’ve held up over the winter months. Join us as we delve into the spirited festivities of this epic event, traditionally held in March each year. We had the opportunity to visit the sacred halls where the Starkbierfest will take place upfront, and we were truly amazed when we saw the magnificent and spacious Löwenbräukeller in downtown Munich.

The Starkbierfest, a traditional Bavarian Strong Beer Festival, holds a significant place in Bavarian culture. Starting in March each year, Munich locals and visitors alike come to the famous Nockherberg and other places in the city of Munich (and Bavaria as well of course) to celebrate the region’s rich brewing heritage. Among the notable venues hosting this event, the Paulaner Nockherberg stands out as the most popular location.

The Starkbierzeit and its strong beer

Originating in the 17th century, the Starkbierfest was initially tied to the Lenten season when monks brewed Doppelbock, a strong beer, for sustenance during fasting periods. Today, it has evolved into a festive occasion marked by camaraderie and appreciation for Bavarian brewing. Remarkable for the Starkbierzeit is also the strong beer that is served. The most famous one is the “Salvator” from Paulaner which brings 7,9% of alcohol with it. The creation of this bottom-fermenting double bock is credited to the Paulaner monks. The brewing of Salvator has spanned more than 375 years, adhering consistently to the original recipe while undergoing gradual refinement throughout its history.

The Nockherberg Experience: A Highlight of Starkbierfest

Nockherberg, established in 1812, is renowned for its contribution to Munich’s brewing legacy. During the Starkbierfest, it becomes a focal point for enthusiasts and a meeting point for Munich locals. The ceremonial tapping of the first barrel of Starkbier, known as “Anstich,” is a time-honored tradition presided over by Munich’s mayor, symbolizing the official commencement of festivities. You will also find a lot of important German politicans on the Nockherberg by this time.

Beyond the Beer: Exploring Bavarian Culture

While beer remains central to the Starkbierfest, noone should forget about the delicious food that is served as well and which helps to mitigate the impact of the strong beer a little bit: Traditional cuisine such as Schweinshaxe or Obazda, along with the beautiful Bavarian Tracht provides further insights into local customs and traditions. Additionally, the surrounding Au-Haidhausen district offers opportunities for leisurely exploration amidst charming cafes and picturesque parks.

A must-visit for us

For us as beer experts and Lederhosen-lovers, the Paulaner Nockherberg is of course a must visit. Normally it is the first time of the year, where we have the chance to check whether our Lederhosen still fits perfectly. Especially when the first warm rays of sun come out and we wear our Tracht for the first time, there is nothing more beautiful than a day at the Nockherberg with friends or family, raising a stein in celebration of Bavarias rich history. But be warned: The name of the beer says it all – don’t underestimate the strongness of the Starkbier and always eat something along with it.
